As the winds pick up from the north, smoke from fires burning to the north in Siskiyou and Humboldt counties will make the skies above Redding hazy through the first part of this weekend.

The skies above Redding this week have been intermittently smoky, though air pollution levels remained in the ‘moderate’ range Friday morning.

“It looks like the smoke will hang around at least until Saturday” before the winds shift, National Weather Service meteorologist Jeffrey Wood said Friday morning.

Wood said by Saturday afternoon, the winds are expected to shift to the south and that should help blow some of the smoke from the wildfires out of the area.

As of Friday afternoon, there are three fires burning north of the greater Redding area.

    Shelly Fire in Siskiyou County

The fire, burning southwest of Greenview off Highway 3 in Siskiyou County. is the largest of the blazes burning north of Redding.

The Shelly had burned 15,473 acres, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Friday.

The blaze is 18% contained and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

"A hot and dry pattern with enhanced terrain-driven winds will continue for the next several days, with a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms Saturday evening," a California Interagency Management Team news release said.

The Shelly Fire started July 3.

    Hill Fire in Humboldt County

The fire is burning in the Six Rivers National Forest south of Highway 299 in Humboldt County.

It had burned 4,472 acres and was zero percent contained, Cal Fire said Friday.

    Donomore Fire in Siskiyou County

The fire is burning near the Oregon-California border.

The Donomore Fire had burned 35 acres with no containment, Cal Fire said Friday.
