In a surprising move, New York Sports Club (NYSC) has announced the closure of three gyms in Florida, leading to layoffs for 108 employees. This decision comes as part of a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notice filed with the state’s Department of Economic Opportunity, which is required when a company plans to lay off 50 or more employees.

The gyms closing are located at:

    • 9375 Six Mile Cypress Parkway, Fort Myers
    • 1755 Boy Scout Drive, Fort Myers
    • 1140 Ceitus Terrace, Cape Coral

These closures will take effect on August 31, and sadly, this will leave NYSC without any remaining locations in Florida. For many, this marks the end of their fitness journey with NYSC, which once was known as Around the Clock Fitness before rebranding.

NYSC has had a challenging few years. Previously part of Town Sports International, which went bankrupt in September 2020, NYSC was bought out by investors in December 2020 and transitioned to a private company. The brand also faced legal troubles during the pandemic, with lawsuits from the New York and Washington, DC, Attorneys General for allegedly charging dues when gyms were supposed to be closed.

For those affected, the layoffs are a tough blow, and the gym closures mark a significant reduction in fitness options in the area. If you’re one of the 108 employees impacted or a member of one of these gyms, you may want to reach out for support and assistance as you navigate this transition.
