COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged a man with voluntary manslaughter earlier this week, after an inmate was killed in late March .

SLED charged Jordan Scott Tilson with voluntary manslaughter on July 16, in connection to the death of Michael McMahan.

Officials ruled McMahan’s death a homicide after an autopsy found that he died from a head injury consistent with being assaulted by someone, the coroner said.

According to warrants, Tilson allegedly struck McMahan with a closed fist on the right side of the head, causing the 24-year-old to fall and hit his head on a steel hand rail.

McMahan died in the early morning hours on March 29 at the Oconee County Detention Center.

Tilson will remain incarcerated at the Oconee County Detention Center.

SLED added that the case will be prosecuted by the 10th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
