A project to widen Highway 140 in Cherokee and Fulton counties is getting an infusion of state funding, and preliminary engineering is expected to start next year.

The state has allocated $7.5 million for “SR 140 operational and capacity improvements in north Fulton/’Cherokee” for fiscal year 2025, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation . The work is primarily widening.

The project is part of a $1.5 billion transportation infrastructure package announced by Gov. Brian Kemp July 18. The money comes from surplus funds earmarked earlier this year by state lawmakers for transportation.

“Investing in our county’s infrastructure is crucial for maintaining our quality of life. I have been advocating for improvements throughout our county, and I’m pleased to announce that the Highway 140 project is scheduled to begin preliminary engineering in 2025,” state Rep. Brad Thomas, R-Holly Springs, said in a statement.

In his newsletter to constituents, Cherokee County Commissioner Richard Weatherby credited Thomas with securing the funding for the project.

“As many of you know, our district has experienced rapid growth over the years, and our infrastructure has been striving to keep pace. These improvements to State Route 140 will play a crucial role in advancing our infrastructure to better serve our community. The enhancements will not only improve the flow of traffic but also ensure safer travel for all residents,” Weatherby wrote. “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Rep. Brad Thomas for his exceptional leadership and dedication to this project.”

Representatives of the Georgia Department of Transportation did not immediately respond to a request for more information about the project.
