WWE Summerslam 2024 Rumors: Seth Rollins could serve as guest referee for Drew McIntyre vs. CM Punk

There has yet to be a match officially booked for Drew McIntyre and CM Punk for Summerslam, for one very clear and definite reason: Punk hasn’t been medically cleared yet despite his best efforts. In the event he is soon, as expected, it is a foregone conclusion he and the Scottish Warrior will finally clash legally in a ring; but there’s also the Seth Rollins dilemma ahead of Summerslam.

If the latest rumors are true, the Visionary could serve as special guest referee for the bout — a variation of the triple threat match many presumed would potentially take place.

It would be an interesting dynamic, but it feels rather obvious who Rollins would likely lean toward handing the match, and that person damn sure isn’t CM Punk.

You see, Rollins was the first to verbally tear Punk an extra hole when the latter returned to the WWE at Survivor Series in Chicago, effectively stealing the entire show, and their hate was reignited at Money in the Bank when Punk interfered in the title bout between Rollins and Damian Priest to prevent McIntyre from successfully cashing in.

He succeeded but, in the process, also cost Rollins the match.

And, with that, after months of their feud being put on the backburner so that Rollins could play a significant role in the lead-in to Wrestlemania between Cody Rhodes and The Bloodline, it’s back to center stage and Punk has two clear-and-present foes to contend with simultaneously; and that could set the stage for Punk to take the victory to show he’s truly back for more than just legendary promos.

After all, he’s been on IR after only one match back, the Royal Rumble, and could use a megawin of some sort. Then again, McIntyre is past due for a megawin of his own, so how this would play out is anyone’s guess.

The way the WWE is slow playing the Summerslam booking is smart, using a supposed suspension against McIntyre to create an air of doubt for the match against Punk because, if Punk isn’t cleared before Aug. 3, it gives the promotion an easy out by appearing they’re taking a hardline stance on the recent attacks by McIntyre on officials and general manager Adam Pearce.

But, if he is cleared, everything will go on as intended, leaving the WWE Universe waiting only to see how Rollins will be penciled into the latest chapter of this action flick.
