Roundabout under construction in Henrico, hopes to enhance traffic safety

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A roundabout with pedestrian crossings and light beacons is being installed on Derbyshire Road, with Henrico County officials hoping it will improve traffic safety in the area.

The roundabout will be located on Derbyshire Road at its intersection with Heathfield Road and Lakewater Drive, according to a July 19 Facebook post from Henrico County Public Works & Public Utilities.

“The roundabout is part of a larger project to enhance safety, access and connectivity in the area,” the post reads. “The other potential improvements remain under design.”

According to the county’s website , such improvements will include:

• A paved shared-use path on the north side of Derbyshire Road
• Modifications to the sharp curve near Gunby Drive
• The addition of a left turn lane at N Mooreland Road
• Additional pedestrian crossings

A community hearing was held in March regarding such improvements and it generated overall positive feedback, according to county officials. Further meetings will be scheduled, though dates have not yet been announced.

“Due to resident concerns with speeding and cut-through traffic, county officials are moving now to complete the roundabout in the existing right-of-way,” the post reads. “This will help reduce speeds on Derbyshire, enhance traffic safety and improve accessibility for pedestrians.”

The roundabout project should be finished by late summer.
