French mayor slammed for swimming in the Seine after Netflix film's warning ahead of Olympics

As Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the Seine River , many worried that a Netflix thriller would become a reality.

On Wednesday, Hidalgo upheld a promise she made to swim in the notably polluted river to prove that it was safe enough to swim in for the upcoming Paris Olympics . People were skeptical it would be unsafe, citing pollution and possible fecal matter, but some movie lovers thought there could be another danger lurking in the water.

Back in June, Netflix released a film, Under Paris, in which a triathlon was going to kick off in the Seine, in the run-up to the 2024 Olympics . However, marine researcher Sophia Assalas (Bérénice Bejo) tried to stop the race once she found out a killer giant shark was lurking in the river.

The fictional mayor of Paris, played by Amme Marivin, ignored Sophia's pleas, and the Triathalon went on as planned - but a bloodbath ensued. Those who watched the French language film took to social media to liken Hidalgo's swim to the events in the horror film.

"Oh, no. I’ve seen this movie. It didn’t end well for anyone. Except sharks. #underparis," one person wrote on Twitter, now known as X. Another asked: "Isnt this the plot to #UnderParis ????"

Others pointed out that Hidalgo must not have seen the Netflix original. "Did [she] not watch @netflix #UnderParis," someone else asked.

"Having watched Under Paris I wouldn't be doing this," a second chimed in. A third wrote: "Is she trying to debunk the movie #UnderParis."

Luckily, no sharks were found and Hidalgo made her way out of the river unharmed. The Summer Olympics are set to start next Friday, July 26.

Besides worrying about the mayor's safety, fans praised the campy horror film. "Under Paris might be one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen maybe I’m not supposed to watch horror movies as if they’re comedies but I am ROLLING," someone said.

Even horror author Stephen King raved about it, writing: "I thought UNDER PARIS would be a jokey movie, like SHARKNADO, but Twitter convinced me to give it a watch, and it's really quite good. The last 25 minutes were amazing."
