( WJET/WFXP) — After the announcement of new license plates matching the Commonwealth’s welcome sign , two Pennsylvania state senators will be introducing legislation to bring back a popular license plate.

State Senators Dan Laughlin and Wayne Langerholc announced Friday they’ll be introducing the legislation soon, calling now the perfect time to bring back the Niagara plates with an updated design.

Between the historical significance the ship holds, PA’s efforts to modernize and enhance license plates, along with access to new technology to fix problems associated with the plate’s initial release in the 1990s.

“As the relief flagship of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry during the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812, it played a pivotal role in securing a critical American victory. This victory ensured American control of the Great Lakes and boosted national morale. The ship is a symbol of bravery, resilience, and the maritime heritage of Pennsylvania.”

Flagship Niagara license plates were discontinued due to significant legibility issues and were available to PA drivers between late 1995 and early 1997.

“The Flagship Niagara played a crucial role in our nation’s history,” Langerholc said. “This plate will help us remember its significance to Erie, the commonwealth, and the entire country.”

Both senators hope to have them available in 2025 around the time the Flagship Niagara is scheduled to return to Erie from Cleveland where it’s set to be under maintenance.
