Former President Donald Trump said Friday afternoon that he had what he called a “very good” phone call with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy in which the latter condemned last week’s attempt on his life.

NBC News reported it was believed Zelenskyy would call Trump a day after he accepted his party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention and six days after Trump was grazed by a would-be assassin’s bullet .

Trump posted on his Truth Social app on Friday that such a call did take place, and described Zelensky’s reaction to the assassination attempt:

President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and I had a very good phone call earlier today. He congratulated me on a very successful Republican National Convention and becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States.

He condemned the heinous assassination attempt last Saturday and remarked about the American people coming together in the spirit of Unity during these times.

I appreciate President Zelenskyy for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families. Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity.

Zelenskyy’s call with Trump comes as many election forecasters have said they believe the former president could win in November – defeating President Joe Biden if he indeed remains on the ballot.

In a second Trump administration, Ukraine’s ongoing defensive war against Russia would be heavily influenced by Trump, who has called for the two sides to come to an agreement to end the conflict.

Trump’s running mate JD Vance previously expressed apathy toward the outcome of the war and called for Washington to focus more on domestic issues.

The former president was impeached following a 2019 phone call with Zelenskyy in which he was accused of attempting to coerce the Ukrainian government into investigating then-former Vice President Biden or he would withhold military aid.

Trump was not convicted in the Senate on charges of abuse of power and obstruction.
