BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Bay County students head back to class on August 12. Schools are trying to clean up campuses before they arrive.

Volunteers from Tyndall Air Force base were on the Cedar Grove Elementary campus Friday morning. They joined staff, teachers, and other volunteers, painting classrooms, moving furniture, and sprucing up the grounds.

Cedar Grove has what’s known as a new turn-around principal, brought over to improve the school’s current “F” grade. She’s hoping to expand the relationship between the school and Tyndall.

“We’re a Title One school, and so a lot of our students just do not get to experience military life or, you know, they hear about it and see about it. Well, we want them to be able to experience that and to know that there are people that care about you. You care about your school and your community. And there will be events here on campus. They’ll be able to interact with them. And it’s going to give the students another opportunity to see what they can do in the future. And it’s bright out there and we want them to experience that,” Cedar Grove Elementry Principal, Crystal Boyette said.

Boyette says she hopes the changes she’s implemented will make the school feel and look different for students and create a positive, energetic culture.
