GOP Congressman Calls to Defund Secret Service After Trump Shooting: ‘We Have to Stop Giving These People Jobs’

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) called for the U.S. Secret Service and other government agencies to lose funding on Friday, just six days after a series of security lapses nearly resulted in the shooting death of former President Donald Trump .

Trump was speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania, last Saturday when a gunman opened fire on his rally. Trump was shot through the ear. Two of his supporters were also wounded while a third – former firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed protecting his family.

After Comperatore’s Friday evening funeral , Roy joined The Ingraham Angle on Fox News to discuss who he thought was to blame for the shooting of Trump and the death of Comperatore.

“I am so upset as an American, so angry as an American, as a friend of Donald Trump, just as someone mourning for the poor Comperatore family which buried their father and their brother and their husband tonight,” host Laura Ingraham said as she welcomed Roy on her show Friday.

Roy was apoplectic when discussing the security failures that led to Comperatore’s death and the shooting of Trump.

“Yeah, Laura, I couldn’t agree with you more,” he said. “Right now the president of the United States – the former president, and hopefully soon-to-be present of the United States – is alive not because of what Secret Service did, but because he providentially turned his head. That’s the truth.” Roy continued and ultimately supported defunding the Secret Service, if necessary:

The fact is the American people are sick of it. They are sick of Lloyd Austin still having a job after Afghanistan. Pete Buttigieg after derailments and boats hitting in bridges. Sick of the FBI and sick of the intel community – all of these people keep their jobs. And now the Secret Service endangers the former president and the sitting Republican nominee and they are acting like nothing happened. They didn’t even have a drone flying. The guy who did it flew a drone. It is absolutely unbelievable what we are seeing here.

Ingraham commented, “You can’t even make it up.”

Roy concluded, “But here’s the deal, we have to stop funding it. We have to stop giving these people jobs. We have to hold them accountable. And to your point, I’m glad Mike Johnson said we need one task force. We need to funnel it through one organized effort in the House.”

In the week since Trump’s shooting, the Secret Service has not held a formal press conference to address how the man who targeted Trump was able to get a clear line of sight and ultimately wound the former president.
