HAMPDEN COUNTY, Mass. (WWLP) – “I don’t lean on social media very often and the fact that they were able to get this close to my personal information is unnerving,” says Sarah from Hampden County.

Local IT companies discuss what led to the global tech outage and if there’s a chance for another

It all started Wednesday morning. Sarah didn’t even have the Facebook app on her phone when she was hacked. Those behind the hack now pursuing a fake story begging her online friends for money.

The Hamden District Attorney’s office says schemers want to prey on user’s friends and family members’ emotions, all for financial gain.

Now Sarah from Hampden County says her main concern is why Facebook doesn’t have a direct phone number where people can call them if they get hacked and have other issues.

“I have family members who have contacted and reported and said this is no longer the individual please take the page down Facebook is reporting back to them and saying nope we think this page is okay they just seem to be turning a blind eye to it and the only way you can report on Facebook is if you’re an active user and I’m completely off now and I have no opportunity to get back on unless I recreate an account.”

The District Attorney’s office now urging people to check their accounts frequently and always take extra steps to protect their identity online.

Officials say to change your passwords often, make them difficult, and set up a two-step verification process for your social media accounts.
