Corn market participants have seen a steep fall after prices peaked in the Spring of 2022. Last year's planting season rally saw prices peak at $6.30 based on the new crop December 2023 futures. Many farmers/producers held onto their crops, anticipating higher prices. However, record production in the US and Brazil led to an oversupply, causing prices to plummet. Consequently, US corn storage on farms soared to a 16% increase over the prior year and hit an all-time high. Farmers now face storage costs amid higher interest rates while hoping for a price rebound, but with prices just above $4 per bushel and the break-even point slightly above $5.00, selling will need to be done on price rallies.

Tumbling Corn Prices Have More Room to the Downside

Two recently published USDA reports have boosted livestock prospects at the expense of corn prices. The annual ﻿acreage﻿ report included larger-than-expected corn acres, which put downward pressure on corn prices.The report listed corn acres at 91.5 million acres, which was 1.4 million acres higher than the March Prospective Plantings report projected. After corn prices surpassed $6 for the 2022/23 marketing year, prices fell below $5 for the current marketing year, and are projected to be closer to $4 for the 2024/2025 marketing year.

Also, an outage at the Freeport liquified natural gas terminal has reduced US gas exports and boosted already bloated inventories. The Freeport LNG terminal slowly began to restart after Hurricane Beryl damaged part of the plant. The Freeport LNG plant is one of the largest in the US and can liquefy as much as 2% of US daily gas production.
