Rory McIlro is rooting for his Olympic teammate Shane Lowry at The Open Championship despite not making it past Friday's cut.

McIlroy had a rough time at Royal Troon, missing The Open's cut for only the third time in his career, ending up 11-over-par after two rounds. This setback extends his wait for a fifth major title into its 11th year, with his last triumph being the PGA Championship in 2014.

Although disappointed by his own game, McIlroy didn't hesitate to express support for his pal Lowry , who's topping the leaderboard at seven-under, holding a two-shot advantage over Justin Rose and Dan Brown.

"I can't wait to watch this weekend. [Lowry is] so creative. I think even just watching the coverage the last couple of days, that little sort of squeezy cut that he can hit, especially going out in that front nine, is going to be really helpful to him. Yeah, look, he relishes these conditions."

"He loves playing these conditions. The Open Championship is his favourite tournament in the world. He gets more up for this than anything else. I'm looking forward to cheering him on and hopefully him getting his second [Claret] Jug.", reports the Mirror .

With an eventful weekend ahead for Lowry, McIlroy must regroup and plan his next move. His elusive major championship victory continues to hang over him, but with this year's major tournaments wrapped up, his sights are now set on the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

McIlroy is gearing up for his second Olympic appearance, where he will represent Ireland alongside Lowry at Le Golf National. "There's still a few things there's left to play for," he said on Friday.

"Obviously the majors have come and gone, but to sort of refocus and try to reset for the Olympics, which will be another cool experience."

He's aiming for a strong performance at the Olympics and is also in the running for titles on both sides of the Atlantic, keeping his competitive spirit alive throughout the year. McIlroy has had a solid run in 2024, securing victories on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour.

His year began triumphantly with a fourth win at the Dubai Desert Classic in January, followed by a victory on American turf at the Wells Fargo Championship in Mayhis fourth win at this event as well. Despite not making a significant impact at the Masters and US PGA, he narrowly missed out on glory at last month's US Open.

McIlroy, who was leading by two shots with just five holes left, ended up playing his final four holes in three-over-par. This allowed Bryson DeChambeau to snatch victory at the 72nd hole.
