Former President Donald Trump 's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention drew 25 million viewers, more than he did in 2020, but far less than in 2016.

Viewership of Trump’s speech peaked around 11 p.m. during which Trump was recalling the story of his assassination attempt for the first time from the point of view of how he experienced it. Trump delivered the longest acceptance speech in history, close to 90 minutes, and viewership fell as he continued to talk, according to Nielson .

The late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)’s presidential nomination acceptance speech in 2008 drew the most viewers in RNC modern history with 38.9 million viewers.

In 2016, when Trump became the Republican nominee for the first of three campaigns, 32.2 million people watched his acceptance speech. In 2020, 23.8 million people tuned into Trumps’ acceptance speech, which is the lowest RNC viewership since 2008.

Most viewers watched the speech and the entire convention on Fox News. The network set a record with the most people watching a single cable channel during a convention on Thursday night during Trump’s speech, garnering 10.4 million viewers at its peak. CNN drew in 2.2 million viewers and MSNBC drew in 1.3 million viewers during the speech.

Nielsen only includes live TV streaming in its numbers and does not account for those who watched on phones or computers, nor does it account for those who watched later or on social media.
