Paul Hollywood's net worth in 2024 is largely due to his indelible and inimitable presence on The Great British Bake Off and The Great American Baking Show , complete with his concise critiques and hard-to-earn handshakes.

As it turns out, Hollywood says that even if he wasn't making serious bread from the show, he'd love it anyway, if only for the warmth and comfort that it brings not just to audiences, but also to judges.

"My father was a baker, I appreciate hard work and I appreciate people who try their best. Baking is very nostalgic and very homely," he told Rolling Stone . "There's nothing better than a homemade apple pie. They've taken time to create something for you, and it's about family, it's about friends, it's about sharing, it's about love, it's about passion. It’s everything ."

He added that baking comes with a lot of history because it's one of the oldest occupations. "It's about harnessing that power and creating magic," he says.

Of course, in Hollywood's case, it also pays really handsomely, which probably helps. Find out how Paul Hollywood kneaded his way to a fortune.

How did Paul Hollywood become famous?

Paul Hollywood was born March 1, 1966, in Wallasey, Cheshire, England, and baking was basically part of his DNA: His father was a baker and a bakery proprietor.

After high school, Hollywood briefly studied sculpting at the Wallasey School of Art but left before graduating to work in his father's bakery, which was called Bread Winner (gotta love a food pun ). Afterward, he worked in other bakeries before becoming the head baker at several swanky U.K. hotels, including Chester Grosvenor and Spa, the Cliveden Hotel and the Dorchester — and he baked for some serious A-list stars.

"Obviously, pastry and baking were my thing, and one time Tom Cruise was in with Nicole Kidman ," he recalled to Rolling Stone . "They were in Ireland filming Far and Away at the time. I used to do blueberry and pumpkin muffins at The Dorchester, and there was a request put in for extra muffins. I thought, 'This is weird. I made enough.' And the room service guy came down and said, 'We need some more muffins.' And I said, 'Well, it's gonna be at least an hour. Who's this for?' And they said, 'It’s for The Cruise Party.' I said, 'You mean…' and they said, 'Yeah.' They went over well."

After working in high-end hospitality, Hollywood traveled to Cyprus, Egypt and Jordan to study local baking techniques, recipes and methods.

In 2001, Hollywood made his TV debut with an appearance on the U.K. game show The Generation Game , and four years later appeared on the U.K. food news show Taste .

In 2010, he appeared on The Great British Bake Off , launching him to full-on food celebrity stardom thanks to his chemistry with Mary Berry .

"She is like my posh mum and I am her Northern child," he joked to The Liverpool Echo of Berry. "There are some areas of baking she is less comfortable with which are more my bag, but she has very strong opinions and we have had some arguments about which contestant should go."

His polite but firm critiques earned him comparisons to Simon Cowell but Hollywood said that his goal isn't to insult anyone. His goal, he says, is to inspire a contestant's best work, which differentiates him from some more mean-spirited reality TV judges.

"There's an honesty to Bake Off ," he told TIME . "Sometimes my choice of words to describe what I’m looking at or tasting might be a little bit harsh. But I'm straight to the point. Other programs are quite destructive in their criticism because all they want to do is shoot them down in flames and use that as part of the program. Making and baking things for people nurtures more of a soft approach than it does an aggressive one."

He continued appearing periodically on British TV to wax poetic on baking and got several of his own series, including Paul Hollywood's Bread , Paul Hollywood's Pies & Puds , Paul Hollywood City Bakes , Paul Goes to Hollywood and several specials. In 2022, Hollywood joined The Great American Baking Show as a judge.

Hollywood recognizes his privilege to be able to do what he loves for a living and for leisure — because even when Hollywood isn't baking for work, he's still baking for fun.

"I think I'm in a very lucky position, doing my job," he told Love Food . "I love baking at home on my own. It's peaceful, I’m not bothered by anything. And I get to eat it at the end."

How does Paul Hollywood make his money?

Hollywood's biggest income source is from judging The Great British Bake Off , for which he reportedly earns a little more than $519,000 per season — quadruple what he was making when Bakeoff was on the BBC, when he made about $128,000 each season, according to The Sun .

He closed down the company after his celebrity made it simply too much to manage (especially when factoring in its relatively low sales).

Did Paul Hollywood go to university?

    Briefly!

Hollywood studied art at Wallasey Art School after high school, but left to become a baker before he graduated.

"I went to art college straight from my main school. I looked at textiles, photography, pottery, and sculpture," he told Rolling Stone . "And it was sculpture that really took my fancy because it was building the armatures, and the clay, and the manipulation of the clay, and creating these amazing figures. I loved it, to be honest."
