Minnesota is facing some tough news on the employment front. Rich Products Corporation, a major global food manufacturer known for brands like SeaPak and Carvel ice cream cake, is closing its Fridley facility. This closure will lead to the loss of 170 jobs.

The Fridley plant, located at 7350 Commerce Lane, is set to shut its doors by December 31, with layoffs starting on September 13. This move is part of a larger strategic shake-up within the company, which is also managing its operations in Eagan.

Rich Products isn’t alone in making these difficult decisions. Charter Communications, better known as Spectrum, has also announced layoffs in Minnesota. In June, they revealed that their customer contact center in Rochester would be closing on August 15, affecting at least 330 employees.

Charter is moving its operations to different locations across the U.S. They’re offering affected employees the chance to transfer with relocation benefits. For those who choose not to relocate, severance packages will be provided. However, there are no union members at the Rochester center, and Charter doesn’t offer “bumping rights” where employees can replace others based on seniority.

It’s a tough time for many workers in Minnesota, with both Rich Products and Charter Communications making significant cuts. Let’s hope the affected employees find new opportunities soon.
