NJ’s FAVORITE FLAVOR Chocolate is apparently New Jersey’s favorite 2024 ice cream flavor for 2024, according to a consumer preference study, released on July 17th.
The Most Favorite Ice Cream Flavor by State also says vanilla ranks #1 as the nation’s favorite ice cream flavor, with people from 19 states saying it’s their preference. Chocolate is the #2 choice with 15 states favoring it, most along the East Coast.
ICE CREAM FACTS ● In 1813, Dolley Madison – wife of President James Madison – was the first, First Lady to serve ice cream as the dessert at her husband’s Inauguration Ball. ● In 1843, Nancy Maria Johnson (1794–1890), from Philadelphia, received the first U.S. patent for a hand-cranked ice cream freezer. ● In 1890, Evanston, Illinois banned the sale of ice cream sodas on Sundays, saying they were “ too sinfully rich to be consumed on the Sabbath .” Merchants came up with a syrup-covered ice cream dish, sold only on Sundays, to skirt law: The Sundae! ● In 1861, Bassetts Ice Cream opened in Philadelphia. Today, it is America's oldest ice cream company, still owned by a fifth generation of the same family. ● In 1937, a Georgia bakery began selling snack-cakes named for First Lady Dolley Madison, but called it “Dolly Madison.” They later launched “Dolly Madison Ice Cream,” sold for decades in the U.S. Hostess acquired the company, but stopped marketing Dolly Madison Ice Cream in 2012.
