It's hot. You probably didn't need an excuse.

And for thirty years, the third Sunday in July has been ice cream day in America. And that means ice cream parties and ice cream deals. Sometimes it even means free ice cream.

Here are the local Delaware spots and nationwide chains offering farm tours, petting zoos, inflatable axe throwing, oddball flavors, free ice cream and more on National Ice Cream Day.

Or just don't worry: Go to your favorite ice cream shop in Delaware. Go on Ice Cream Day, or go on some other day. Ice cream is pretty much always a party.

Cool treats: Looking for cold treats at Delaware beaches? Here are 3 new places to get them

Best scoop?: Reader's Digest claims this is the best ice cream in Delaware. Have you tried it?

    Woodside Farm Creamery

1310 Little Baltimore Road, near Hockessin, 302-239-9847; woodsidefarmcreamery.com. Hours: Noon to 8 p.m.

On a farm nearly as old as the country itself, Woodside Farm Creamery makes dozens of flavors using milk from the dairy cows who perch themselves out front.

And on National Ice Cream Day starting at noon, you get to meet the cows, including the babies. For one day and one day only on Sunday, Woodside is opening up its farm for tours and bovine meet-and-greets, plus demonstrations of how they make their ice cream.

For the ambitious, there's also an ice cream eating contest. And a food truck will be on hand making cheese-filled pizza cones — which is to say, ice-cream-themed pizza.

In addition, Woodside will debut three new innovative flavors, available for the tasting only on Sunday. Vote for your favorite, and it'll show up on the ice cream menu alongside Turtle, bacon and the classic chocolate and strawberry.

    Hopkins Farm Creamery

    18186 Dairy Farm Road, Lewes. (302) 645-7163 or hopkinsfarmcreamery.com. Hours: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Well, never let it be said that Hopkins Farm Creamery doesn't know how to throw a party. The 16-year-old farm creamery is going big for Ice Cream day, with " a giant slide, bouncy house, face painting, balloon maker, food trucks, tractor ride thru the farm, ax throwing (inflatable - not real axes), mechanical bull, cotton candy, DJ and of course ICE CREAM!"

Is there a petting zoo? Yes, there's also a petting zoo. The Little Farm will be on hand with all sorts of animals. View the ice cream being made through a little viewing door.

Located on Green Acres Farm just off Route 9 near Lewes, Hopkins has over 30 ice cream flavors made on-site ready to be served in cups, cones, milkshakes, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches and more.

    Uncle David's Ice Cream

    237 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, 302-493-6001, uncledavidsicecream.com

Uncle David's is a brand-new shop benefiting and staffed by people with Down's Syndrome. They'll be partying hard on National Ice Cream Day for good reason: it's their grand opening weekend. Stop in for ice cream from Hopkins Farm Creamery including their special weekend flavor: Peach Cobbler, made with peaches from Bennett Farms.
