On July 15, 2024, a Facebook post from the page YODA BBY ABY claimed that in October 2024, Prime Video would release a live-action limited series based on "Spirited Away," the Academy Award-winning 2001 film by Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli. The caption of the post read:
MIYAZAKI'S SPIRITED AWAY LIMITED SERIES!!!
Coming to Prime Video in October 2024, the magical world of Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away is reimagined in a live-action limited series. This 8-episode journey, brought to life through a groundbreaking partnership between Studio Ghibli and Amazon, follows 10-year-old Chihiro Ogino as she is thrust into a fantastical realm filled with spirits, gods, and mystical creatures. The post had received around 2,300 reactions, 765 comments, and 2,000 shares at the time of this writing, and many of the commenters seemed to believe the post's claims. "Whaaaaa 😍 oh I hope they can do it justice," one wrote.
This post was not a factual recounting of real-life events, however. The post originated from a Facebook page that describes everything it posts as satirical. According to YODA BBY ABY's Facebook bio , "I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news." Given that this disclaimer is on the page, we rate this claim as "Labeled Satire."
There has been no official announcement of a live-action series based on the animated film, although a recorded performance of a 2022 stage adaptation of "Spirited Away" has been available on various streaming services since late 2023 .
This is not the first time rumors of a live-action "Spirited Away" series have spread online. A different false claim about an alleged live-action series based on "Spirited Away" circulated on Reddit , X , and other social media sites in February 2024. That claim, which showed a different fake poster and included slightly different details, such as the show being distributed by Netflix with a release date in May 2024, also originated as a post on the YODA BBY ABY Facebook page.
This is also not the first time we have fact-checked posts from the YODA BBY ABY page. Previously, posts from the page alleged that new series were in the works based on the 1993 film " Hocus Pocus " and the classic HBO series " The Sopranos ."
