I think we can all relate to that never-wanna-leave feeling we have when spending time on a beach and the regret-I-left emotions that come days after returning home. However, there are certainly ways to bring elements of the beach to your space so you always have a piece of your favorite place to relax, relate, and release. Handy DIYer Flip Daddie took a break from flipping thrifted finds into gallery-worthy furniture to make something we all can actually recreate: A 'coastal candle' made out of a massive seashell .
You could never make me hate coastal decor ! There's always something so freeing about taking elements of nature and bringing them into the home — even if we have to do it with faux materials. Addie used wax from candles she already had, melting them down via warming them in boiling water on a stove. For a safer, albeit slower, approach — you can also melt wax on a candle warmer !
Below, you'll find some directions and supplies for pulling this off at your place:
Beach-themed decor for the win, always.

Step 1: Gather your supplies, of course.
Step 2: Place your candle wicks inside the large shell bowl, taking care to adhere them firmly to the bottom and space them out so they can be safely lit individually
Step 3: Melt your wax via the warmer or boiling on on top of the stove (careful!)
Step 4: Pour the melted wax carefully into the beach bowl
Step 5: Let the wax harden.
Note: In the candle-making classes I've taken, the direction from professionals has always been to wait 24 to 48 hours after pouring . Even when the candle looks solid on the top, it could still be unmelted inside. This is especially the case in the summer when the overall environment is warmer. Messing with it too soon could result in you destroying your lovely handiwork.
Lastly, do not put the candle with the fresh, hot wax into the refrigerator to speed up the cooling process. If it's inside glass, it can shatter. Just set it and forget it.
Step 6: Once the wax is fully hardened, place the shell candle where you want it in the house and light those wicks to give the space a beachy, beautiful glow!
Also, here are some handy supplies for recreating this stunning coastal candle in your own home!
Ahead of buying candle wicks, be sure you know the height of your seashell bowl so you can get wicks long enough to stand up higher than the wax. The wicks you grab should be tall enough to use sticks to hold them in an upward position and cut after the wax has hardened. You can get a huge pack of candle wicks for $4.99 on Amazon .
Price: $4.99 for a pack of 100 wicks, 30 wick stickers, and 10 wooden popsicle sticks
Note: Yes, this pack comes with popsicle sticks that usually work for regular-size candle jars BUT with the large coastal candle you're making, you'll need something much longer to reach both sides of the seashell. I've got you covered. Next slide, please.
3. Wooden skewer sticks
Looks like Addie used skewer sticks taped together at the ends to hold the wicks up while she poured the wax in and let it harden. Genius! You can get a pack of bamboo skewer sticks for under $6 on Amazon to execute this.
Price: $5.90 for a pack of 100, 11.75-inch skewers that are more than long enough.
You can get a pack of four white candles inside glass jars for under $20 at Amazon. And you know I can't refrain from informing you that these are also available in abundance and in different colors at Dollar Tree . Save the coins wherever you can, friends!
Price: $18.99
Or, a bag of soy candle wax to skip the glass cylinders.
If you already have glass containers to use, then skip the jarred candles and just order soy wax by the bag on Amazon. This wax listing comes with easy-to-understand directions and photos to guide you through the candle-making process.
Safety first, always! Making candles might be lots of fun but never forget to take precautions so you don't end up with a painful mess on your hands — literally. These gloves are made with heat-resistant nitrile and cotton-lined to add an extra layer of protection from hot wax spills and splashes. They're also great for cooking and grilling !
Price: $14.95 for a pack of 50
