In the beginning, Cody Rhodes was part of the foundation of AEW but he knew his time would not last and there were better options; like WWE.

For those who might have forgotten, Cody Rhodes is in his second stint with WWE. The first time, he left after being disappointed with the direction. It saw Rhodes travel the world and work for several promotions, some small and others large. During that time, he put together All In with The You Bucks and Kenny Omega . Not longer after, Tony Khan entered the picture and now we have AEW.

In the early days of AEW, they relied on known talent, like Chris Jericho and Rhodes, to sell the show. And, it worked. Although, Cody would be the only one to not re-sign and instead rejoin WWE . While on the Insight podcast with Chris Van Vliet , Rhodes revealed knowing AEW would not be his final destination. “I just remember [AEW] lovingly and I also knew I was leaving,” said Rhodes. “I knew it was a season and knew this wasn’t going to last. There was something greater for me out there. And, I know that might sound negative to people, but it’s not. That’s the biggest prize in the wrestling game.”

He did claim the biggest prize in WWE after defeating Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 . In the process, he ended one of the longest title runs we have ever seen. It took a year longer than many hoped, but Cody is now the top face in WWE.

When Cody departed AEW , he heavily teased a heel turn. His contract simply expired and the idea was never fully seen. Now, that could certainly change in WWE. I see “The American” working as heel and probably back as a face before his time ends. So, did Cody Rhodes make the right call in leaving AEW for a WWE return?
