Prince Harry's close friend has spoken out after stepping down as the chief executive of the Invictus Games Foundation after almost 10 years with the organization.

Dominic Reid, a key figure in launching the inaugural Invictus Games with Prince Harry in 2014, announced his departure this week, shortly after Harry faced backlash for receiving the Pat Tillman Award for Service at this year's ESPY Awards.

Following his resignation, Dominic praised the positive impact of the Invictus Games on veterans and acknowledged the "privilege" of his role. He said he believed it was "the right time" for him to step aside.

Speaking to Forces News, Dominic highlighted the remarkable growth of the Invictus community, noting its 40% annual expansion and the inclusion of friends and families as a crucial development. He celebrated the community's healing influence as one of the organization's significant accomplishments.

Dominic described the Invictus Games as a "great place" but suggested that the time had come for someone else to bring a "new perspective" and fresh energy to lead the charity into its future. He elaborated on the need for new leadership, stating that the next phase of the Invictus Games would benefit from renewed vigor and a different outlook, marking an opportune moment for change.

Upon learning of the transition, Harry paid a heartfelt tribute to his friend, lauding his service and unwavering dedication. He said: "Ten years on from the inception of the Invictus Games, we proudly stand as a community of 23 nations spanning every continent, fulfilling our mission of saving and changing lives.

His tireless efforts over the past decade have supported thousands of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans through sports rehabilitation, helping to showcase their unparalleled strength and contribution to society."

Dominic announced his decision to step down and said it was "the time for someone new to take this vital movement forward into its second vigorous decade". He noted the significance of picking his successor and voiced his eagerness to pass the baton while still actively supporting the foundation, adding: "Once a member of the Invictus family, you never leave."
