For as many cult followers IKEA has, the truth is it probably has just as many haters. Many lists have hit the internet over the years with products to avoid buying at IKEA — the most recent one landing on Apartment Therapy just days ago. That said, there's an IKEA sofa design with a reputation its owners are willing to defend with their testimonials. Plenty of products from the iconic Swedish retailer go viral on the internet daily and many also have gushing reviews on the brand's site. Still, none are more vouched for than sofa style that people say has lasted them for years .

If you've ever questioned whether or not IKEA's fast approach to furniture can really result in durable pieces that turn out to be worth the coins, look no further than its lush Gronlid sofa.

The sofa has a simple, L-shaped design and plush pillows that extend higher than the back of the frame to offer maximum support. Depending on the country, it's available in various colors including white, green, grey, and orange.  But the most standout detail about this furniture piece per reviewers, is that it LASTS AND LASTS AND LASTS.

Let's just start with this one-year-later review from Gronlid sofa owner, Alice Rose . When she first posted about buying this couch, people warned her against it — especially since she got it in a gasp-worthy white.

"At the time, a lot of people told me I was making a mistake and that the sofa would be such bad quality that within a year, we'd need to buy a new one," she shared.

She also defended her white color choice saying, "Look, it is part of the vision for my house, OK? The girlies that get it, get it."

Her decision to buy this specific white couch was based on its size and the fact that it's easy to clean. "The covers on this thing are fully detachable. You can stick them in the washing machine and they come out looking brand new."

A year of use and she's still enjoying the couch — and this is no coincidental one-off. success.

Surprisingly, several people took to her comments to express that they own the same couch — many of which bought it before she did and still have good reports.

Another look at Alice's lovely IKEA couch

"We’ve had this one for 2 years now and still love it," Eeeshs Pieces wrote to Alice. "We have the chaise lounge & the 2 seater & everyone who visits us is always jealous of the comfiness too 🤣🤣."

"We have the same one- absolutely fine nearly 2 years on," Finncwright wrote similarly.

Leona Connolly also reported that she owns it. "3 years now and still going amazing 😍," she wrote.

Phoebe Morris has an even longer history with the Gronlid couch. "Had ours 5 years and the only thing wrong with it is sun damage 😂," she shared.

And Jayfar, the person with the longest-running experience with the prized Gronlid, also confirmed its durability: "I've had mine 6 years and it's absolutely fine! added some extra memory foam sheet to seat cushions. washable covers ROCK..."

Now, I've got one bit of bad news and several pieces of good news.

Bad news first: The entire Gronlid series of sofas isn't available anywhere in the world "right now" according to IKEA's page for the collection .

On to the good news: For starters, IKEA is always pausing production and then picking it right back up, so this couch could literally return any time. Cross your fingers and keep watch if you're committed to grabbing if/when it becomes available.

More good news: Per my digging, the HARLANDA series is the updated replacement for the Gronlid. The major difference between both series is that the Harlanda is bigger and more plush.

This wouldn't be the first time IKEA discontinued a product to relaunch it with an updated design. Most famously, the brand launched the Nytillverkad collection this year, full of remixed versions of its most iconic pieces, to celebrate its 80th anniversary.

The HARLANDA series isn't a mere reboot. It's full of different pieces that allow you to customize the sofa to suit your space and budget perfectly! From the fabric color to the couch length to the chaise section, you can literally create your own couch. And if you get tired of the cover? The series features covers in several colors that will fit the couch perfectly. Also, don't forget that IKEA just launched the Tyg series full of vibrant new fabrics if you'd like to DIY your couch ever further with a more standout print!

As a caveat, several reviewers of the upgraded couch did note that they didn't love putting it together. However, IKEA offers ways to make that easier — from their assembly guide to the add-on Task Rabbit assembly service.

All in all? IKEA knows how to make a good couch while giving you the freedom to make it yours in every way. This could literally be the very last couch you ever have to buy.
