Lisa Kudrow Calls ‘The Comeback’ Fandom ‘Thrilling,’ Says ‘We’re Due’ for a Third Season

That famous line from TV’s one-time “it-girl” Valerie Cherish may hold new meaning as the actress behind the character, Lisa Kudrow, shares an update on a possible comeback for “The Comeback.” In a recent interview with Newsweek for her latest show, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s reinvention of Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” for Apple TV+, Kudrow expressed her appreciation for fans of the cult HBO mockumentary series .

“I’m just thrilled and adore anyone who has the level of appreciation for ‘The Comeback’ that meets the level of pride I have for doing that show,” she said. “That is thrilling. I’m happy to hear that.”

“The Comeback” began following Kudrow’s stint on the long-running hit series “Friends” and showrunner Michael Patrick King’s engagement on “Sex and the City.” Kudrow came up with Valerie Cherish as an extension of a character she’d developed during her years at The Groundlings in Los Angeles. The first season covers Cherish, a forty-something has-been actress, as she smiles and muscles her way into a supporting role on a sitcom, facing ageism, sexism, and the cruel Hollywood machine all along the way. While the show was ultimately canceled, a second season managed to materialize nine years later that sees Valerie back in the mix and taking on a serious role based on herself.

When asked if a third season might be in the cards, Kudrow said to Newsweek, “Oh God, I’d love to. Michael Patrick King and I are always talking about what would happen next. Always. And it’s been nine, 10 years now. So we’re due.”

This runs in contrast to previous statements made on the possibility of a third season . In a 2022 interview with The Daily Beast , Kudrow said, “I don’t think we’re gonna make it! Not make it ever, but I don’t think we’re gonna make it in nine years. We also don’t know if HBO wants it, by the way. But we haven’t asked. We’re both sort of like, ‘I’m not gonna ask, are you?’ ‘No, I don’t want to hear ‘no.” It’s something we love so much. That’s why it took nine years the first time!”
