Twister tally: Monday's severe weather broke region's single-day tornado record, NWS says

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The severe weather that roared through the region last Monday night generated a record number of confirmed tornadoes in a single day in Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana, 24.

Meteorologist Lee Carlaw of the National Weather Service Chicago’s office in Romeoville said last Monday's twisters were on the lower end of the EF Scale, which rates the power of tornadoes from 0 to 5.

Carlaw said Monday beat the previous single day tornado record of 22, which happened twice.

“That was back in 2014, June 30, 2014…Two back-to-back thunderstorm systems rolled through and, both of which, were pretty prolific tornado producers,” Carlaw said. “The second instance of 22 in a single calendar day was just last year, March 31.

Carlaw said it's possible the number of tornadoes last Monday night could go higher as more information is evaluated.
