CLARKS SUMMIT, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Folks set foot on a run, to help northeastern Pennsylvanians battling colon cancer.

The Abington Heights class of 2025 and members of the high school cross country, and track and field teams held the Third Annual Shine Like Susan 5k .

The run at the Abington Heights Middle School track was in memory of Susan Burke.

The Clarks Summit woman lost her battle with colon cancer in 2022.

Saturday’s proceeds benefit the Susan Burke Foundation for colon cancer.

Inaugural dynamic & interactive event proves success

This fund provides support to individuals diagnosed with the disease who are experiencing financial hardship.

To date, these high schoolers raised more than $65,000.

“Oh, it’s a really good turnout. Everybody supports Susan Burke, her memory shines on. The sun actually just came out for the finish line so Susan is shining down upon us,” added Lyann Dzielak from Lackawanna County.

Pa live! co-host Chris Bohinski placed fifth in his age group during the 5k.

The morning concluded with a massive raffle basket drawing. Event organizers announced that this year will be the final year for the race, at least in this fashion.
