Princess Anne Had a Hilarious Response to Being Told She Doesn’t ‘Look Like a Princess’

Princess Anne is back to royal duties—and dishing out zingers—after being kicked by a horse in June put her in the hospital for five days with a concussion and minor injuries. But it’s a funny comment the Princess Royal made years ago that’s just been revealed. When told she didn’t “look like a princess,” Anne responded with a few words that had everyone laughing.

A girl once told Anne she didn’t ‘look like a princess’

On July 12, 2024, almost three weeks after being injured at her Gatcombe Park home , Anne attended the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) National Championships. The 73-year-old British royal has been a patron of the RDA since 1971 and its president since 1986.

While her sense of humor was on display that day (more on that later), it’s been a staple at RDA events for years. On an episode of “The Royals with Roya and Kate” podcast, it was revealed Anne had been told she didn’t “look like a princess” at a past event.

“I spoke to someone very senior at the RDA who remembered her coming to see a display by some children at an RDA event,” they said (via Express ).

“And the children that we work with as volunteers at the RDA have all different levels of learning disabilities, different levels of autism, physical disabilities. And there was one girl there who was involved in the display, and they came to meet Princess Anne afterward.”

“She was introduced to her and [they] said, ‘This is the Princess Royal.’” The girl remarked, “‘You don’t look like a princess.’”

Anne was ‘so pleased’ not to ‘look like a princess’

So, how did Anne react? “Princess Anne said, ‘Thank goodness for that. I’m so pleased to hear that,’” they told listeners. “Everyone laughed at her response, and she just literally takes things in her stride.”

But Anne is most definitely a princess. She’s the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. And, yes, Anne does make humorous, if not sometimes stinging, comments . But she’s also someone who has shied away from the pomp and circumstance that can come with royal life.

Perhaps the best example is Anne’s decision not to give her children titles. Her son and daughter, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall , don’t have titles, such as duke and duchess. Nor do they have His and Her Royal Highness in their names.

Anne, who was discharged from the hospital on June 28, 2024, started by sharing the details surrounding her injuries remain a mystery. Anne said at the July 12 RDA event she “can’t remember a single thing” about the June 23 incident.

“As soon as she got out of the car, she said: ‘I can’t remember a single thing about it,’” Helena Vega Lozano, the RDA UK chair, recalled. “It’s hugely motivating and inspiring to have her here.”

Michael Bishop, an RDA chief executive, shared that Anne appeared to be on top of her game. “She was very engaged while talking with all the volunteers and participants. And there were a few quips thrown in, too,” he said. “She was very switched on and recognised [sic] many of the volunteers because she had met them before.”
