July marks National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month, aiming to shed light on the severity of motor vehicle theft and offer preventive measures to help vehicle owners protect their property. The Automobile Theft Prevention Authority (ATPA) has emphasized the importance of taking proactive steps to avoid becoming another statistic.
"We want vehicle owners to know there are precautions they can take to reduce the risk of auto theft," said Chris Baldwin, Executive Director of the ATPA. "Something as simple as always locking your car and not leaving the keys inside increases the chances that those looking for an easy theft will move along."
The ATPA provides several tips to help reduce the risk of vehicle theft:
Park in well-lit areas: Criminals are less likely to target vehicles in areas where they can be easily seen.
Close and lock all windows and doors when you park: This simple step can be a strong deterrent.
Keep valuables out of sight: Items left in plain view can attract thieves. Store valuables in the glove box or trunk.
Do not leave your keys in your vehicle: Even a quick trip away from your car can be an opportunity for theft.
Do not leave the area while your vehicle is running: Always turn off the engine and take your keys, even if you're just running into a store.
Consider additional anti-theft devices: If your car manufacturer does not provide an anti-theft system, invest in extra protection.
Stay current with vehicle subscriptions: Manufacturer services for communication, emergency response, and remote diagnostics can enhance vehicle security.
The ATPA, part of the Police Grants and Community Services Division, operates under a Board of Directors comprising law enforcement, automobile insurers, and consumers. The board awards annual grants to law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and non-profits to combat motor vehicle theft and assist with related investigations. Funding for the ATPA comes from a $1 annual assessment on each insured vehicle and investment interest.
