A British woman and her Canadian husband have been found dead off the coast of Canada after trying to sail across the Atlantic Ocean .

Bodies believed to be those of Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood were found after their lifeboat washed ashore on Sable Island.

Formal identification is yet to take place.

The pair left Halifax Harbour on June 11, intending to sail to Azores, a Portuguese island, some 8,000km away. They were reported missing on June 18.

They were found on July 10 on Sable Island, an unpopulated Canadian territory only 175km south west of Halifax.

James Clibbery, the son of the British Columbian man Brett, confirmed on Facebook that the pair had died.

"The past few days have been very hard," he wrote.

"My father James Brett Clibbery, and his wife, Sarah Justine Packwood have regrettably passed away.

"There is still an investigation, as well as a DNA test to confirm, but with all the news, it is hard to remain hopeful."

He added: “There isn't anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far unexplained passing."

The couple had documented their journey on their Theros yacht on their YouTube channel , which was called Theros Adventures.

Thousands of people have now seen their launch video and shared tributes.

“Rest in peace my fellow BC'ers,” wrote one, referring to BC - British Columbia .

“You two followed your dreams and had adventures many of us could only imagine.”
