Massive Layoffs In FL As Aviation Company, Menzie's, Loses Major Contract And Will Layoff Over 400

Floridians who travel via any of Florida's 20 airports providing scheduled passenger service might have encountered third-party vendors who provide services such as cargo handling to help the airports run more efficiently. Unfortunately, one of these vendors, Menzie's Aviation, just lost a major contract in one of Florida's airports and will be laying off hundreds.

About Menzie's Aviation: This company is been around in various forms since 1833. They provide aviation services including cargo handling, ground services, and fueling to over 290 airports.

On Indeed, the company's employees give it 2.9 out of 5 stars. While one reviewer called working for Menzie's "chill," another criticized management, low pay, and lack of communication. An additional reviewer claimed the company didn't honor its promise about the number of hours offered.

The Contract Loss And Layoffs: According to a warn letter dated July 17, 2024, Menzie's Aviation lost its cargo handling contract with Avianca Airlines at Miami International Airport as of September 16, 2024. As a result, 409 jobs will be permanently lost. The letter says that company policy does not allow for bumping rights.

Job titles of some of the affected employees were cargo handlers, cargo agents, supervisors, warehouse assistants, and duty managers.

This is not the first third-party vendor in Florida in 2024 to lay off a large number of employees after losing a contract. I've also written about T-Roc, which laid off over 300 employees, and GCM Educations Services, Inc. which laid off over 100.
