Competitors have the chance to win a staggering $17 million, a $500,000 increase from last year's event at Royal Liverpool. The champion will pocket a whopping $3.1 million, the largest payout ever awarded to the Champion Golfer of The Year.
Billy Horschel is currently in pole position to claim that prize. He leads the Open by a single shot after scoring two-under-par 69 in Saturday's third round, bringing his total to four-under for the tournament.
However, he faces stiff competition, with six players tied for second place at three-under. Thriston Lawrence, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and Dan Brown are all hot on his heels.
Scheffler has been a formidable force in 2024, securing six victories on the PGA Tour this season, including the Masters in April. He has already amassed an impressive $27.6 million in prize money and will undoubtedly be eager to add another $3.1 million to his earnings come Sunday evening.
Despite the Open having the smallest purse of the three Majors, and being less than 12 PGA Tour tournaments and all 14 LIV Golf events, departing RandA chief Martin Slumbers admitted this week that he 'doesn't care' about the inferior prize pot. "A, I didn't know that, and B, I don't care," he stated this week.
"There has been a massive increase in prize money. You can look at every sort of number of other sports and things, and you see this going in waves. Do I think it will continue? No, I don't."
