Open Championship prize money as purse less than LIV Golf and PGA Tour events

An exciting final round awaits on championship Sunday at The Open, with some of the best golfers on the planet gunning to get their hands on the Claret Jug at Royal Troon.

As well as the famous trophy, a record-breaking prize pot is on offer too, with a whopping $17 million up for grabs for those competing, a $500,000 increase on last year's event at Royal Liverpool. The winner will bank $3.1 million for their efforts, the biggest payout ever given to the Champion Golfer of The Year.

The man in poll position to take that prize is Billy Horschel, who leads the Open by a single a shot after a two-under-par 69 in Saturday's third saw him move to four-under for the tournament.

He has plenty of competition below him though, with six players all tied for second at three-under in Thriston Lawrence, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and Dan Brown. The world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler is also in the mix, and sits two shots behind Horschel at two-under.

Scheffler has been a dominant force in 2024, having won six times on the PGA Tour so far this season, including the Masters in April. This has seen him bank a whopping $27.6 million in prize money, and he will no doubt be keen to add another $3.1 million to that come Sunday evening.

The Open has the smallest purse of the three majors, and is also less than 12 PGA Tour tournaments and all 14 LIV Golf events. Despite this departing R&A chief Martin Slumbers admitted this week that he 'doesn't care' about the inferior prize pot. "A, I didn't know that, and B, I don't care," he claimed this week.

"There has been a massive increase in prize money. You can look at every sort of number of other sports and things, and you see this going in waves. Do I think it will continue? No, I don't."
