BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Rollover crashes occur when a vehicle is tipped onto its side or roof, usually after some form of spin or trip. In general, they have a higher fatality rate than most other types of accidents — and even those that aren’t deadly can still have disastrous effects on one’s car or physical health. To make matters worse, as a new study shows, they are far more common in North Dakota than nearly anywhere else.

During a study on these accidents, personal injury lawyers with Anidjar & Levine analyzed the most recent data from the NHTSA Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool (2022) to discover which states had the highest number of fatal rollover crashes when compared to their total number of deadly collisions. When these percentages were weighed against one another, it was found that North Dakota has one of the highest rates of rollover deaths in the nation.

According to the statistics, North Dakota is one of the states with the highest percentage of fatal rollovers in the country — with almost half of all deadly vehicle crashes in the Peace Garden State being of this very nature. As opposed to these high risks, smaller, more urban states like Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland report much lower rates of related deaths — with New York in particular having only a fifth of Wyoming’s percentage despite far greater numbers of both rollovers and fatal crashes.

“This study highlights the states in which you are most likely to experience a vehicle rollover when involved in a fatal crash,” explains a spokesman from Anidjar & Levine, “which shows why it is important to drive carefully and be mindful of your surroundings on the road. Wyoming notably ranks at the top of the list and is one of only a few states to have experienced a percentage increase for vehicle rollovers in 2022. This is likely due to factors like speeding on long stretches of road and harsh weather conditions, with some significant snowstorms in recent years. Considering how dangerous vehicle rollovers can be for occupants and other drivers, it would be beneficial to see whether these figures improve in the following years or whether any states should be approached with caution when driving through.”

When traveling in a vehicle, it is important to remember to stay focused and consider the road conditions at all times, as even the slightest misstep can trigger a potentially fatal event like a rollover crash.
