Aviation service company laying off hundreds in Florida

Florida's bustling airports are facing a major disruption as Menzie's Aviation, a key player in aviation services, is set to lay off over 400 employees. This news follows the company’s loss of a significant contract, highlighting a challenging period for airport services across the state.

Menzie's Aviation, a veteran in the industry with roots dating back to 1833, handles everything from cargo and ground services to fueling at over 290 airports. However, the company’s longstanding presence doesn’t shield it from the highs and lows of the aviation world. On July 17, 2024, a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) letter revealed that Menzie's had lost its cargo handling contract with Avianca Airlines at Miami International Airport, effective September 16, 2024.

This contract loss means that 409 employees, including cargo handlers, cargo agents, supervisors, warehouse assistants, and duty managers, will be out of work. Unfortunately, Menzie's policy doesn’t offer bumping rights, so these positions are being cut with no opportunity for other employees to take them over.

The news comes as a blow not only to those directly affected but also to the many travelers who rely on these services for smooth airport operations. Reviews of Menzie's on Indeed reflect a mix of experiences. While some describe the work environment as “chill,” others criticize management, pay, and communication issues. There have even been complaints about broken promises regarding working hours.

This is not an isolated incident in Florida’s aviation sector. Earlier this year, T-Roc laid off over 300 employees, and GCM Education Services, Inc. also made significant job cuts. These layoffs are a stark reminder of the volatility in the service industry and its impact on local economies and employees.
