Maryland's work zone speed camera penalties increased to $80 on June 1

Beginning June 1, fines for speed camera violations in Maryland work zones will increase from $40 to $80, according to a reminder from the Maryland Department of Transportation. This change is a result of the Maryland Road Worker Protection Act, signed into law by Governor Wes Moore on April 9. The Act introduces a tiered fine system starting in January, where penalties will double if violations occur while road workers are present.

The legislation, motivated by the tragic deaths of six highway workers in a high-speed crash on I-695 in Baltimore County in March 2023, aims to enhance road worker safety. Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller emphasized the moral imperative to protect these critical workers at the bill signing.

The new law also permits the placement of more speed cameras in state work zones and allocates funds from the increased fines to purchase additional safety equipment after covering operating costs.
