Firefighters battled a fire started by a lightning strike in Chaffee County on Friday, according to the Chaffee County Fire Protection District .

A storm blew through the Maysville area, and lightning struck a large Ponderosa Pine tree, causing it to catch fire. Chaffee County Fire was called out for a smoke investigation, but the burning tree was on U.S. Forest Service land.

The Forest Service took command, and along with Chaffee County Fire, South Ark, and Salida Fire, hiked a mile and contained the fire within a few hours.

The fire started around 5 p.m. and was contained by 8:30 p.m.
