Kamala Harris Launches Campaign As Joe Biden Leaves Presidential Race: Live Updates

Vice President Kamala Harris has kicked off her presidential campaign following President Joe Biden’s decision Sunday to drop out of the 2024 election.

Democratic support coalesced around Harris almost immediately, with the likes of Biden, House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and other prominent lawmakers and leaders endorsing her candidacy for the nomination. Harris’ nascent campaign also broke fundraising records on Monday, raising $81 million in donations in its first 24 hours.

Harris has begun making the case to voters why she is the right fit to challenge President Donald Trump, pitching her background as a prosecutor as a key strength against the Republican nominee.

“I took on perpetrators of all kinds – predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type,” she said.

Biden, who is recovering from COVID-19 at his home in Delaware, called staffers during Harris’ first trip to campaign headquarters on Monday and told them, “I think we made the right decision.”
