President Joe Biden threw his full support behind Vice President Kamala Harris Sunday as Democrats' best chance to beat former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Biden's Sunday exit from the race comes after weeks of Democrats' publicly pressing him to make way for a younger Democratic nominee.

The president had steadfastly stated his plan to stay in the race but finally gave way Sunday afternoon.

"My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President," Biden wrote in a statement endorsing Harris. "And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this."

Despite Biden's exit from the race, he plans to remain in the office of the president through the conclusion of his term in January 2025.

Harris has yet to announce any information regarding a running mate for herself, but she had previously vowed to face Trump's newly selected running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), in the vice presidential debate.

Democrats had been slated to virtually nominate Biden by Aug. 8 in a virtual roll call. The Democratic National Convention will begin on Aug. 19 in Chicago, Illinois.
