Manchester United have reportedly decided not to take up their option to sign Sofyan Amrabat on a permanent deal this summer.

The 27 year old Moroccan international joined the Red Devils on loan after an impressive performance at the 2022 World Cup, but his season in the Premier League has been somewhat inconsistent.

As part of the agreement with Fiorentina last summer, United had the opportunity to make Amrabat's move permanent for a fee of $28m (£22m). However, earlier this month, it was suggested that United were unlikely to exercise this option. Now, with links to other defensive midfielders, it is reported that United will not be signing the playmaker.

The Italian news outlet claims that United have informed both Amrabat and Fiorentina that they will not be making an offer for the midfielder, who is now set to return to pre-season training with the Serie A side.

Despite uncertainty over his future in recent months, it was reported that Amrabat hadn't given up hope of a return to Old Trafford. While this now seems unlikely, there are other clubs, including some in the Premier League, who remain interested in him.

A previous report from Corriere dello Sport suggested he could leave Fiorentina for just $16m (£12.7m) this summer. United are still expected to sign a new defensive midfielder this summer amid doubts over Casemiro's future at the club, with several names being linked with the Red Devils in recent weeks.

Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte appears to be topping United's wish list, but Martin Zubimendi and free agent Adrien Rabiot are also on the club's radar.

More departures are likely as United look to boost their coffers after splashing out on deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro. The Red Devils have already waved goodbye to Donny van de Beek, Willy Kambwala and Mason Greenwood since the summer transfer window opened last month.

Liverpool.com says: Amrabat arrived at Old Trafford with a decent reputation but never really looked up to speed with the Premier League. United is clearly shifting to sign younger players and will be eyeing a replacement, with Casemiro also potentially leaving before the window shuts.
