Biden’s withdrawal — overdue, and insufficient

President Joe Biden was right to drop out of his race for re-election , but it should have happened months or even years ago.

It has long been obvious that he lacks the health, energy, and mental ability to govern for the rest of this summer, let alone ask for four more years in the Oval Office .

Driven by his lifelong and overweening self-regard, spurred by cynical handlers and left-wing leaders of the Democratic Party, Biden has been trying to dupe the public. It was a monstrous and massively revealing Democrat conspiracy against the interests of the nation and its people. Until only four weeks ago, honestly reporting on Biden’s precipitous and dangerous decline was brushed aside by the entire Democratic Party establishment and their useful Never Trump idiots, as misinformation.

The Left’s conspiracy against America has blown open the fact that their only motive is the hunger for power. Members of the radical movement don’t think simply that half of all Americans are “deplorables” but that all of them are a lumpen impediment to be treated as cynically as victory requires.

Despite promising unity and moderation on the campaign trail in 2020, Biden ran the most left-wing presidency in history because he was only marginally in charge and, anyway, lacked principle, so he did not object to the orders he was given by the militants and bigwigs who controlled him. He spent at greater peacetime levels than ever before in U.S. history, regulated more aggressively even than his boss, former President Barack Obama, put the equivalent of a neon “Welcome” sign on the border for illegal immigrants without any regard for the drugs and crime so many of them brought in, and pushed the most divisively leftist social agenda this nation has ever seen. (For a more detailed account of Biden’s failed presidency, please see our July 20 editorial .)

Because the liberal media long promoted Biden’s image as a man of the left-center rather than the far Left, Democratic leaders thought that even in his addled state, they could just push him through the next election, because they thought that was safer politically than to let more obviously radical contenders fight for the nomination. For them, it was all about power rather than principle.

What changed, especially for Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who clearly pulled the strings to move Biden offstage , was their assessment of the power dynamics.

Even though Biden’s withdrawal letter said it was in “the best interest” of the country for him to forfeit the nomination he won, those best interests were clear before Democratic power brokers pushed him out. What changed was not the best interest of the nation but their jaundiced assessment of what was necessary to keep power and keep implementing their extremist agenda.

If Democrats truly want to serve the nation, they will not just anoint the cringeworthy leftist Vice President Kamala Harris as Biden’s successor. Instead, they will choose someone closer to the political center and eager to find ways to unify America behind a pragmatic, problem-solving agenda. Alas, this does not appear to be what they are planning. Biden’s open but delayed endorsement of Harris looks like an attempt to stack the deck in her favor, and it may be that he would not attempt this if those who pushed him aside were not on board with the Harris choice.

On the other hand, if the party wanted to lock in Harris , it might insist Biden quit the presidency, not just the 2024 race, and thus hand her incumbency that could do much to forestall challengers and a fight at the Democratic convention in Chicago next month.

Democrats, who keep accusing Republicans of being a “threat to democracy,” are guilty of undermining democratic processes on a scale no one else has imagined.

All told, Biden finally made the right decision not to ask for four more years in office. The public, though, still deserves much better than what the Democratic Party seems poised to give them.
