On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced on social media that he would not run for re-election after pressure from other Democrats mounted following the first presidential debate in June.

Following the announcement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reached out to local Democratic and Republican officials to learn their reactions.

    Gay Valimont

"On behalf of a grateful nation, I extend our deepest thanks to President Joe Biden for his dedicated service to our country," said Valimont, the Democratic nominee for Florida's First Congressional District. "While I support his decision, I am saddened to see Joe go. His accomplishments have spanned decades. But what he has done over the last four years has been nothing short of miraculous, bringing us out of a global pandemic and economic disaster. History will judge him well.

"Thank you, President Biden, for your steadfast dedication and for your many years of public service. We in the Democratic party will continue the hard work on your behalf."

    Okaloosa County Commissioner Carolyn Ketchel

"It has been apparent for months that President Biden has been greatly diminished in his mental capacity. The debate between Trump and Biden made that abundantly clear," said Ketchel, a Republican. "I not only believe that he is not capable of running a Presidential campaign but it calls into question if he can continue as commander-in-chief. I have tremendous concerns that our southern border has been erased and whether he can safely conduct America’s foreign policy."

    Walton County Democratic Women's Club

In a Facebook post, the Walton County Democratic Women's Club expressed gratitude for Biden's service to the country.

"You brought us out of COVID and created the strongest and most enviable economy in the world," stated the club. "Together, with President Obama, you brought us out of the economic downturn of 2009 and the automotive crisis. You fought to create gun laws that will make our country safe. You have been an advocate for women and their reproductive rights.

"You have brought kindness, decency and honor to the presidency. By stepping aside, you've paved the way for the younger generation to lead. You are a hero."
