‘Twisters’ Cut a Kiss Between Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones Due to Steven Spielberg’s Advice; Powell Explains Why ‘It’s a Good Spielberg Note’

“Twisters” blasted off at the domestic box office with a huge $80.5 million, but one of the biggest talking points from film on social media is for something that didn’t actually make it into the movie. Set footage depicting stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell filming a climactic scene in which their characters share a passionate kiss went viral in the days leading up to the “Twisters” release, but fans were soon left devastated by the kiss not making it into the theatrical cut.

“I think it’s a Spielberg note, wasn’t it?” Edgar-Jones told Collider about the cut kiss, revealing that executive producer Steven Spielberg opted for the kiss not to be shown in the movie. “I think it stops the film feeling too clichéd, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story. They’re united by their shared passion for something.”

“I also think that this movie is not about them finding love,” Powell added in the joint interview . “It’s returning Kate to the thing that she loves, which is storm chasing. So that’s what you have at the end of the movie. They share this thing, and her passion is reinvigorated, and her sense of home is reinvigorated.”

Powell concluded, “I feel like a kiss would be sort of unrepresentative of the right goal at the end of the movie. And it is a good Spielberg note. It’s why that kid is still in this game. It’s amazing.”

'Twisters' Rocks Box Office With Powerful $80.5 Million Opening Weekend

Spielberg executive produced “Twisters” through his Amblin production banner, which was also behind the original “Twister” film in 1996. The new film, which is billed as a standalone sequel set in the same universe as “Twister” but does not feature any of the same characters, was directed by “Minari” Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung.

In addition to launching to $80.5 million domestically, “Twisters” continued its international run this weekend with $27.1 million from 76 foreign territories. Globally, the movie has grossed $123.2 million to date. The film co-stars Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney and Sasha Lane.

“Twisters” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
