TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hillsborough County Democratic Party chair said the upcoming November election is a “critical” moment for America, and that the party looks forward to being able to “take on the hate that defines MAGA with the full force of the freedom that defines Democrats.”

The statement from the HCDP comes after President Joe Biden announced he will be ending his re-election bid after mounting pressure from other Democrats to step aside.

“I extend our deepest gratitude to President Joe Biden for his transformative leadership,” Hillsborough County Democratic Party Chair Ione Townsend said in a statement. “President Biden’s legacy will be marked by his crucial role in safeguarding our nation from Donald Trump, not once but twice.”

Townsend lauded Biden’s accomplishments on jobs, infrastructure, manufacturing and climate change.

“This election comes at a crucial moment for our nation and our democracy,” Townsend said. “Our challenge is to continue the work of the Biden-Harris Administration: promoting our progressive values of freedom and equality. We embrace the upcoming leadership convention because it is the core of the democratic process. We look forward to emerging from the convention stronger than ever, ready to take on the hate that defines MAGA with the full force of the freedom that defines Democrats.”

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison promised a “ transparent and orderly ” process to choose the party’s next nominee. Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday thanked President Joe Biden for his years of service and said she intends to “earn and win” the Democratic nomination for president.
