Rece Davis Predicts Number Of SEC Teams To Make College Football Playoff In 2024
By Grant Bricker,
2024-07-21
The SEC has had no shortage of College Football Playoff success since it became a part of the sport in 2014. The Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, and LSU Tigers have all won the playoff since that season.
With the playoff moving to 12 teams in 2024, there is a chance for even more teams to punch their ticket. On a recent episode of the College GameDay Podcast , Rece Davis revealed his over/under for the SEC teams he thinks could make the playoff.
Davis set his over/under at five and a half. He was confident that the SEC would have at least four teams make it.
"...Five and a half. I started to say four and a half. Here's why I said five and a half because I think then it's a little bit hard," Davis said. "I mean, maybe it's easier because you just hate the under. But I think you feel like you're definitely getting four."
With the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners joining the conference this offseason, it is more likely that the SEC could have more teams represented in the 12-team playoff.
Georgia last won the national championship over the TCU Horned Frogs in 2023. Alabama last won the national title in 2021, while LSU beat the Clemson Tigers to win the playoff in 2020.
SEC programs like the Ole Miss Rebels and Tennessee Volunteers are searching for their first trip to the playoff. Lane Kiffin hit a significant milestone last season after winning 11 games for the first time in Ole Miss history. Tennessee had a historic 2022 campaign, winning 11 games for the first time since 2001.
This season, the playoffs will run from Dec. 20 to Jan. 20, 2025. If all goes according to plan for the SEC, many teams from the conference could make it.
