Entering training camp, tons of attention will be on Patriots second-year cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

Despite tearing his labrum in Week 4 of the 2023 season, the 2023 first-round pick had a fantastic rookie campaign. In his first batch of professional games, Gonzalez successfully guarded names like Philadelphia receiver A.J. Brown, Miami's Tyreek Hill and New York's Garrett Wilson. As a result of his impressive rookie year, Gonzalez earned an honorable mention in ESPN's list of top-10 cornerbacks for 2024. He also received high praise from his divisional rivals.

“I was able to go against the rookie, he’s real good," Hill said after facing Gonzalez. "[He's a] very lengthy corner, [who] had some real good technique and speed about him.”

Undoubtedly, Gonzalez will be New England's top cornerback for the 2024 season. His tasks will be to guard the best receivers on the opposing team for the entire game, which will be especially challenging due to New England's difficult list of regular-season opponents.

In Weeks 1-6, Gonzalez will be facing the league's best receivers with no bye week. He will start off the season juggling Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins in Cincinnati, then square off against Seattle's DK Metcalf, and then rematch Wilson, before facing San Francisco's Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.

After that, he will play Miami's dynamic duo in Hill and Jaylen Waddle, then Houston's Stefon Diggs.

The rest of the year's challenges are more spread out for Gonzalez, but not any easier. He'll see the Titans (DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley) in Week 9, the Rams (Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua) in Week 11 and the Dolphins once more in Week 12.

2024 will be a make-or-break year for Gonzalez. If the Texas native manages to stay consistent and hold his own against the league's best, he will cement himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the game. If he struggles, however, his impressive standing in the league may disappear, and his starting job could go with it.
