CBS’s Brennan Warns It Would Be ‘Political Suicide’ For Any Democrat To Challenge Kamala Harris For The Nomination

CBS News anchor Margaret Brennan warned that her sources among Democrats say it would be “political suicide” for anyone in the party to oppose Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee and successor to President Joe Biden .

On Sunday afternoon, Biden announced he is out the 2024 presidential race and won’t be the party’s nominee. The news came after weeks of chaos in the party over the election after Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump last month, as well as his still-plummeting poll numbers and growing lack of confidence in his ability to campaign and govern.

Not long after he announced his withdrawal, the president gave his support and endorsement to Harris to take his place on the Democratic ticket in November. Harris took control of the campaign’s $96 million war chest and received endorsements from leading Democrats in the following hours, and the horse race to be her vice presidential nominee took off.

Brennan noted during a panel discussion for Face The Nation that sources in the Democratic party have said that anyone in the part “looking to challenge her” for the nomination at the upcoming convention “would be committing political suicide.”

However, reporting on Sunday indicates at least one person has shown interest in challenging Harris at the convention, former Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin, who reportedly expressed an interest Sunday in rejoining the party in order to make just such a challenge.

My sources agree with yours in terms of not seeing a head to head challenger. But the question then becomes who is the person who stands beside her? August 19th at that Democratic convention to seek the nomination in that Vice President role. That’s where the focus is. Anyone, I was told, looking to challenge her would be committing political suicide. To try to go head-to-head after Joe Biden hadn’t been so key in making it very clear, just within minutes of announcing he was not going to seek reelection, that he was endorsing her. So that’s what we’re looking at now.
