The king is dead, long live the king! (In Daemon’s subconscious, at least.)
Sunday’s House of the Dragon included two scenes featuring Paddy Considine’s King Viserys Targaryen, whose death at the end of Season 1 set in motion the war that is Season 2’s backdrop. One of the interactions — Viserys’ banishing Daemon from King’s Landing after the latter called Viserys’ poor, dead infant son Baelon the “heir for a day” — was a recreation of a moment from the series premiere . Only this time, instead of sneering insolence, Matt Smith’s Daemon was near tears as the king ripped into his brother.
The second was an interaction we hadn’t seen before: Daemon holding Viserys and comforting him as the king wept over the body of his wife, Aemma, who died during Baelon’s birth. While Daemon’s first vision was fraught with anger and outrage, the second was marked by tenderness and grief; Daemon apologized to his brother for not being there when he was needed, and bore witness to the king’s overwhelming sadness. Given the way the scenes were shot, TVLine wondered if maybe the HBO series had used Season 1 footage and/or a previously cut scene, along with some visual effects, to create Daemon’s tortured dreams. But a rep for HBO confirms that Considine indeed returned to set in Season 2 to film new footage.
