RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As President Joe Biden withdrew from his re-election campaign Sunday and threw support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, there was more mention of Democratic North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper as a possible VP pick for Harris.

The North Carolina Democratic delegation endorsed Harris Sunday evening — with a unanimous vote of 168 delegates to support her at the Democratic National Convention next month, the group announced.

Other states such as South Carolina and Tennessee also said their Democratic delegates would back Harris.

NC Gov. Cooper remains on short list of potential Harris running mates, reports say

Just last week, political insiders said Cooper, who is term-limited as governor, was among three Democrats most commonly mentioned as a Harris running mate.

On Sunday, Cooper, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly — each from a swing state and mentioned as a possible running mate for Harris — also endorsed her for president.

“She has what it takes to defeat Donald Trump and lead our country thoughtfully and with integrity,” Cooper said on social media.

The Biden campaign has made North Carolina a key target this year, as it was the state Donald Trump won in 2020 by his smallest margin.

As of Sunday night, the best betting odds on BetOnline were for Shapiro at just under 2-1 odds or 19/10.

But, Cooper and Kelly were tied at 3/1 odds, according to the website.

Last week Cooper said he had not had conversations with Harris or the campaign about potentially joining the ticket and said it was “speculation we do not need.”
