We’d love to say we didn’t see House of the Dragon ‘s latest shocking romantic ‘ship coming, but we sort of did? For weeks, we’ve watched as Rhaenyra Targaryen ( Emma D’Arcy ) became more and more isolated on Dragonstone. Her husband, Daemon ( Matt Smith ), has left her high and dry. Her Small Council constantly undermines her with sexist remarks. Her eldest son and heir Jace (Harry Collett) treats with the Freys behind her back and her strongest, staunchest ally, Rhaenys ( Eve Best ), has fallen in battle fighting for her claim. Truly, the only person who has been getting closer to Rhaenrya in HBO ‘s House of the Dragon Season 2 is the White Worm, Mysaria ( Sonoya Mizuno ).

Although she was introduced as Daemon’s lover all the way back in House of the Dragon Season 1, Mysaria has been an independent agent for most of the HBO series. That is, until House of the Dragon Season 2. When Rhaenyra shows Mysaria respect and mercy, she finds herself happy to serve the would-be Queen. Mysaria counsels Rhaenyra when no one else will and comes up with plans to boost her popularity with the smallfolk. And now? It seems Mysaria wants to get even closer to Rhaenyra…

**Spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 6, now streaming on Max**

In one of the final scenes of House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 6, Rhaenyra and Mysaria embrace and start making out. It’s a romantic development that’s not anywhere in George R.R. Martin’s books, and yet it makes total sense given certain developments this season.

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Episode 6 Recap: Dragon Ballsy

Rhaenyra seems to be the only person Mysaria has ever trusted and, right now, Mysaria is the only one Rhaenyra can trust. Put that potent emotional intimacy in a blender with the heightened stress of war (and the fact that Rhaenyra and Mysaria are both gorgeous) and, yeah, you could see a romance blossoming.

Naturally, the hot and heavy makeout scene happens during a scene of extreme emotional vulnerability for both women. Rhaenyra admits that she always felt that she and Daemon were two halves of the same whole. Rhaenyra wished she was Daemon — feared, powerful, masculine — while Daemon coveted what Rhaenyra had in Viserys’s (Paddy Considine) love and respect. Mysaria opens up by revealing that her own father molested her as a child. When she became pregnant, he cut the infant out of her, rendering her infertile, and choked her, leaving her for dead. But she survived…and she had not let herself trust anyone until Rhaenyra.

Throughout the episode, Rhaenyra has also expressed her frustration with the misogyny she faces day in and day out. While the struggles of women within the patriarchy has been a theme throughout House of the Dragon , Rhaenyra seems to loathe being a woman. She longs to be associated with the trappings of male power, mainly the sword and shield. The fact that House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy identifies as nonbinary in real life shouldn’t go unnoticed. Nor should the reports that younger series actors Milly Alcock and Emily Carey played with undertones of repressed queer love in young Rhaenyra and young Alicent’s friendship.

With House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 6’s sapphic kiss between Rhaenyra and Mysaria, the subtext is now text. Queer relationships certainly exist in Westeros and now Rhaenyra and Mysaria are embarking on one of their own.

How far would their passion have led them if they hadn’t been interrupted with news that Seasmoke had claimed a rider? We can only speculate. What will Daemon potentially make of his ex and his estranged wife hooking up? Again, it can only be fodder for fan theories. Nevertheless, House of the Dragon has made the inner lives of Fire & Blood ‘s characters all the more interesting.
